A zip screen (zip curtain) is a new-generation outdoor screen whose fabric is locked into side channels with a zip system, keeping it tensioned and wind-resistant. It is widely used to close the sides of café and restaurant terraces, balconies and winter gardens.
Key features
- Wind resistance: system and fabric are designed to withstand winds of up to 140 km/h.
- Waterproof: special fabrics keep rain out.
- Compact case: small 10×10 and 15×15 cm cassettes and ceiling retraction avoid visual clutter and loss of space.
- Versatile: also used on ceilings and sloping glass roofs for sun control.
Zip screen or glass balcony?
Glass panels stack at the sides when open and take up space; a zip screen rolls up into the ceiling cassette, so you use the full balcony width. It looks cleaner and is usually more economical. If insulation and all-season use are the priority, glass systems may be more suitable.
Zip screens are often combined with pergolas or rail awnings; for a lighter vertical shade see vertical awnings.
