A bioclimatic pergola is a pergola whose roof is made of aluminium louvres that rotate on their own axis instead of a fabric cover. Adjusting the angle of the louvres controls how much sunlight and air comes in; when the louvres are fully closed, the roof shuts against rain. At Sunrise Tente we size each bioclimatic pergola to the space and install it with our own team in Kocaeli.
How does a bioclimatic pergola work?
The louvres sit between load-bearing aluminium profiles and are rotated by a motor. When they are slightly open, sunlight filters through and warm air escapes upwards, keeping the shaded area cool and airy on summer days. When fully closed, the louvres meet to close the roof. Rainwater runs along the louvre channels into gutters inside the frame and is carried away through downpipes.

Advantages
- Light control: change the louvre angle to go from full shade to soft daylight.
- Natural ventilation: open louvres let warm air out so the space never feels stuffy.
- A roof that closes against rain: with the louvres closed, water drains away through the gutters.
- Permanent aluminium structure: no fabric to replace, and a clean, modern architectural look.
- Motorised operation: louvres are rotated by remote control; automation options can be added on request.
- Evening use: LED lighting integrated into the profiles keeps the space usable after dark.
Where is it used?
- Villa and detached-house terraces, garden-level seating areas
- Rooftops and penthouse terraces
- Balconies and terraces enclosed together with glass systems
- Terraces with a view and poolside areas
- Restaurant, café and hotel terraces
The project photos below show some of our garden-level, rooftop and glass-enclosed balcony installations.

Options and equipment
Every bioclimatic pergola is sized to its space. The main options chosen per project are:
- Mounting: wall-mounted or free-standing on four posts.
- Colour: profile and louvre colours can be matched to the façade and window frames.
- Control: motorised operation with remote control.
- Lighting: LED lighting integrated into the profiles.
- Side enclosure: zip screens or glass systems for a space you can use all year.
Bioclimatic or fabric-roof pergola?
| Bioclimatic pergola | Fabric-roof (rail) pergola | |
|---|---|---|
| Roof | Aluminium louvres rotating on their own axis | Waterproof fabric that opens and folds on rails |
| Light and air | Gradual adjustment with the louvre angle | Roof opens completely when the cover is folded |
| Look | Permanent, modern aluminium roof | Lightweight; open sky when the cover is folded |
| Best suited to | Villa terraces, rooftops, balconies, hotels | Wide restaurant and café gardens |
For fabric-roof systems see our pergola systems and rail awning systems pages. During the site visit we look at your space and decide together which system fits best.

Site visit, production and installation
- Site visit: we measure on site and check the floor, wall, orientation, wind and drainage.
- Project and quote: we prepare a clear quote based on size, colour, lighting and side-enclosure choices.
- Production: the approved project is made to measure.
- Installation and handover: our own team installs and tests the system before handover.
What determines the price?
- Width and depth of the area, need for intermediate posts
- Wall-mounted or free-standing installation
- Colour, LED lighting and automation choices
- Side enclosures (zip screens, glass), if required
- Condition of the floor and wall

Frequently asked questions
Does a bioclimatic pergola let rain through?
With the louvres closed the roof shuts against rain; water drains away through the louvre channels and the gutters in the frame.
Is a bioclimatic pergola motorised?
Yes. The louvres are rotated by a motor and controlled by remote control.
Can it be used in winter?
Yes. With the sides closed by zip screens or glass systems, the space can also be used in winter.
Can it be installed on a balcony or rooftop?
It can be installed on balconies, terraces and rooftops with suitable size and load-bearing conditions. We check the floor and wall during the site visit.
How is it different from a fabric-roof pergola?
A bioclimatic pergola has a roof of rotating aluminium louvres that adjusts light gradually; a fabric-roof pergola has a cover that opens and folds on rails, so the roof can open completely.
